Phillip Lindley

Departmental Administration

I have undertaken every post within the department, often occupying several simultaneously, as is sometimes necessary in a small department. I was Head of the Department of History of Art at Leicester between 1998 and 2003.  In 2001 our RAE submission was the highest the department has ever achieved.

As Head of Department, I was responsible for three major innovations. The first was the addition of Film to the departmental portfolio. With two colleagues (in History and Modern Languages), I co-designed a new BA programme and made two appointments of lecturing staff both of whom were quickly offered promotions at other universities, confirming that they had been good choices.  I designed or redsigned and  implemented Certificate programmes in Art and Architectural history at sub-degree level.  As I intended, some mature students progressed from successful completion of the certificates to the BA programmes and beyond.
